20+ Allergy Friendly Treats To Give This Year’s Trick-or-Treaters

Did you know that each Halloween, the average American consumes 3.4 pounds of candy! That night alone, trick-or-treaters eat about 3 cups of sugar in one sitting.

With more than 158 million people participating in the festivities, all kids have to do is go door-to-door to get their hands on a free, sugary treat. However, it’s not that simple for some.

15 million people in the United States have food allergies. In fact, 1 out of every 13 children in the states have at least one, making enjoying Halloween candy quite difficult.

Most candy contains at least one if not all eight of the most common allergens found in our food – milk, tree nuts (i.e. almonds/cashews/walnuts), peanuts, eggs, wheat/gluten, soy, shellfish (i.e. shrimp, lobster, crab), and fish (i.e. salmon, tuna, bass).

Put yourself in their shoes.

Imagine going trick-or-treating with all your pals. Afterwards, you gather around and as your buddies are eating all of the candy they just got, you realize you can’t eat more than half of it, and have to throw it away.

Or worse, can even be the classroom Halloween parties.

Say your child attends his class celebration and he has a gluten allergy. The room mom passes out homemade brownies as the treat, and at the party, he even wins Halloween bingo. The prize is a king-size Twix bar, which he also can’t eat.

It’s important this time of year (and frankly for every holiday, birthday, or celebration at school and among friends) to create an awareness about these awkward situations kids face daily when they have food allergies.

It’s amazing how easily they can be avoided.

Luckily, there are many food manufacturing companies and brands out there that cater to the needs of these kids. They aren’t just the Enjoy Life‘s of the world either. Some of the most well-known and popular brands have options that are clear of all allergens.

This Halloween, let’s include everyone in the festivities. No kid deserves to feel left out from all the fun. So make sure to pick up some of these treats to pass out to the kids who come to your door.
